Policy-Wire/UK: Nicolás Maduro, in power for more than 12 years, has been captured by U.S. forces in Venezuela.
Trump confirms U.S. strikes against Venezuela and says Maduro and his wife have been captured.
Earlier, Venezuela’s government accused the United States of launching attacks on both civilian and military installations across multiple states, strongly rejecting what it described as “military aggression” by Washington. In response to the reported strikes, President Nicolás Maduro’s administration declared a nationwide state of emergency.
U.S. President Donald Trump later claimed that American forces had carried out a “large-scale strike” against Venezuela, directly targeting the country’s leadership. Writing on Truth Social, Trump asserted that President Nicolás Maduro and his wife had been “captured and flown out of the country” following the operation, which he said was conducted “in conjunction with U.S. law enforcement agencies.”
“This operation was done in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement. Details to follow. There will be a News Conference today at 11 A.M., at Mar-a-Lago,” he added.
The United States has long accused Nicolás Maduro of heading an international drug trafficking network, allegations that he has consistently denied. President Donald Trump did not provide further details on how Maduro was captured or where he has reportedly been taken, while the Venezuelan government has yet to confirm the claims.
Washington had previously offered a $50 million reward for information leading to Maduro’s arrest. Combined with a significant U.S. military build-up in the region over recent months, the move was widely interpreted across Latin America as a signal aimed at encouraging defections from within Venezuela’s power structure.
