Poland Urges Allies Not to Bypass Eastern Europe in Russia Peace Talks
Poland warns Western allies against negotiating with Russia over Eastern Europe's head as Warsaw pushes for a permanent US military presence.
POLICY WIRE — Warsaw, Poland — Poland has issued a stern warning to international allies that the security priorities of Eastern Europe must not be ignored during diplomatic efforts to conclude the conflict in Ukraine.
This stance comes as Warsaw actively resists against potential proposals to restart the importation of Russian gas into the region.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk voiced these urgent concerns to a gathering of journalists, urging fellow European leaders to remain deeply skeptical of the actual motives driving Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Tusk also emphasized the need for realism regarding any potential diplomatic framework spearheaded by the United States, suggesting that Putin may have hidden intentions in play.
Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski echoed these sentiments, stressing that the regional interests of the eastern flank cannot be sidelined in high-level negotiations.
The warnings reflect a growing climate of anxiety regarding the long-term military commitment of Washington to Europe under the Trump administration.
In response to this uncertainty, eastern flank allies—led by Poland—are demanding a permanent U.S. presence while simultaneously increasing their own national defense budgets.
