POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — Jon Stewart abandoned the stage during The Daily Show after expressing utter confusion over President Donald Trump’s choice of focus for his final election-eve address.
The 80-year-old president delivered a lengthy speech Monday afternoon at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Despite being his final plea before voters decide on the control of Congress, Trump spent over 20 minutes discussing a delayed and expensive renovation project at the site.
Stewart began his monologue by broadcasting footage of the president boasting about the restoration of the Reflecting Pool. In the video, Trump summoned an assistant to display photographs showing aged joints and corroded pipework.
During the clip, Trump claimed that he had kept every promise he made and suggested he had actually fulfilled far more than he had originally pledged.
Stewart countered the claim, stating that such a feat is not dimensionally possible in reality, though it might be possible in a demented sense.
The host pointed out the historical significance of the location, noting it is the same spot where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous 1963 civil rights speech. Stewart asked the president to outline the most important issues for the American people while standing in the shadow of the memorial.
Stewart then showed a montage of the president rambling about topics such as algae, unpleasant odors, paint applications, and cracked granite. At one point, Trump reportedly described the area as a massive piece of pool.
After the footage concluded, Stewart stared at the camera in stunned silence before simply telling the audience a good night and exiting the stage entirely.
Stewart eventually returned to his desk to elaborate on why the remarks were so baffling. He explicitly assured viewers that the footage was not generated by artificial intelligence or any other form of intelligence.
He questioned the logic of the president of the United States using the day before the midterms to stand at the reflecting pool specifically to discuss the reflecting pool itself.
Stewart referred to the event as the ‘I Had It Cleaned’ speech, a play on Dr. King’s historic address. He remarked that the president’s priorities were so misplaced that it explained the expectations for the following day’s results.
The appearance at the Lincoln Memorial concluded a month of MAGA rallies across the country. The upcoming midterm elections are viewed as a test of Trump’s second term.
Senate races are contested in several states Trump previously won, including Texas, Ohio, North Carolina, Alaska, and several others. In the House, Republicans are attempting to retain battleground districts that the president won in 2024.
