Liberman Clashes with Eisenkot in Tense Confrontation Over Anti-Netanyahu Coalition Strategy
Avigdor Lieberman berates Gadi Eisenkot, claiming his minority government plan is sabotaging the anti-Netanyahu bloc's electoral prospects.
POLICY WIRE — Jerusalem, Israel — A recent heated meeting between Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Lieberman and Yashar party head Gadi Eisenkot resulted in a sharp confrontation, according to sources familiar with the proceedings.
During the session, Lieberman reportedly accused Eisenkot that his current campaign tactics and emphasis on forming a minority government have severely undermined the broader change bloc and its chances at the ballot box.
The internal friction centers on a strategic disagreement regarding whether the opposition to Netanyahu should attempt to establish a minority government supported by parliamentary factions from Haredi or Arab parties.
When questioned about the possibility of forming a government without participation from Arab or Haredi groups, Lieberman suggested that the only path might involve Likud members of the Knesset defecting.
Despite these recent personal tensions, Lieberman has previously pledged his support for Eisenkot’s bid for prime minister, while seeking to replace Yair Lapid as the speaker of the Knesset.
However, Israel’s opposition bloc has maintained a firm stance that they will not engage in negotiations with Arab parties in their efforts to challenge the current leadership.
