POLICY WIRE — Toronto, Canada — Police in Toronto have faced criticism after allowing a 23‑year‑old man suspected of a violent home invasion to leave St. Joseph’s Health Centre without being arrested.
The suspect, identified as Daijohn Richards, is alleged to have joined masked intruders who broke into the $2.1 million Bridle Path mansion of real‑estate executive David Morton, 75, his wife and their two daughters.
During the chaotic raid, Richards was unintentionally shot in the shoulder by his own firearm and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Officers arrived at St. Joseph’s, questioned Richards several times about the injury, and then released him, saying they could not make an arrest on the premises.
The police attended the hospital, and we conducted a number of interactions with this male prior to him being released from hospital, a police spokesperson said.
A Canada‑wide warrant has now been issued for Richards, and detectives are urging anyone with information to come forward.
