AI-Generated Disinformation Videos Linked to Russia Target U.S. Senate Candidates
Discover how AI disinformation videos linked to Russia exploit real individuals to target U.S. Senate candidates during the final stretch of voting.
POLICY WIRE — New York, United States — Artificial intelligence-generated social media videos allegedly originating from Russia are exploiting the names and photographs of real individuals to spread disinformation targeting two Democratic Senate candidates in the closing phase of the midterm elections.
One of the primary targets is Senator Sherrod Brown, who is locked in a competitive race against Republican challenger Jon Husted in Ohio. The manipulated video mimics a news broadcast and prominently features a photograph of Haya Akbik, an individual who interned for Brown several years ago.
Describing the situation as appalling, Akbik told reporters that every claim linked to her identity within the footage is completely fabricated. She noted that because her name and reputation are being used to push false allegations that ultimately harm the senator, the malicious campaign is deeply disturbing.
A second video targets James Talarico, a candidate running against Republican Ken Paxton for a Senate seat in Texas. This particular clip is structured as a direct-to-camera confession purportedly delivered by a former student of Talarico.
Campaign representatives have strongly denounced the tactics, pointing out that political opponents are resorting to AI deepfakes, foreign bots, and conspiracy theories because they cannot defeat the candidate using facts alone. Social media platform X has intervened by removing the initial posts and suspending associated accounts for rule violations.
Despite these platform takedowns, duplicate uploads persisted online with hundreds of shares, highlighting the ongoing challenge of halting the rapid spread of election disinformation. Media forensics experts, including Clemson University professor Darren Linvill, noted strong similarities to previous clips produced by the Russian network Storm-1516 during the 2024 presidential campaigns involving Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
Dartmouth College AI researcher Hany Farid confirmed through technical analysis that the clips targeting both Brown and Talarico were manufactured or altered using artificial intelligence. While the Ohio video represents a lower-tech fabrication, the Texas clip aligns closely with past foreign interference operations deployed immediately prior to election days.
