China to Deploy Special Envoy to Middle East Amid Rising Regional Tensions
Beijing is dispatching special envoy Zhai Jun to the Middle East to mediate regional conflicts and push for de-escalation as tensions continue to rise.
POLICY WIRE — Beijing, China — The Chinese government has announced plans to dispatch a special envoy to the Middle East in the near future to address the escalating instability currently gripping the region.
Foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun confirmed the diplomatic initiative during a daily press conference held on Tuesday. Guo emphasized that Beijing remains deeply concerned regarding the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and surrounding territories.
Zhai Jun, the Chinese government’s special envoy on Middle East issues, has been tasked with traveling to the region. His primary objective is to work toward the de-escalation of the current tense situation.
During the briefing, Guo urged all involved parties to prioritize the resolution of their differences through dialogue and negotiation. The move signals a renewed effort by Beijing to engage diplomatically as fears grow that regional hostilities could continue to spread.
The decision follows discussions between China’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Wang Yi, and his Saudi counterpart, Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud. During a telephone conversation on Wednesday, Wang proposed the deployment of the envoy to help mediate the fallout from military actions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
