China Condemns US Stigmatization After Pentagon Labels Confucius Institutes National Security Threats
Beijing slams US smearing after the Pentagon designates Chinese-funded campus Confucius Institutes as national security threats. Read the full report.
POLICY WIRE — Beijing, China — China has strongly rejected what it terms the targeted smearing and stigmatization of Confucius Institutes by Washington, arguing that the decision undermines cultural and educational ties between the two nations.
The rebuke from Beijing followed a formal designation issued on Friday by the United States Department of Defense, which officially classified the Chinese-funded cultural centers operating on American university campuses as a risk to national security.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the organizations act as propaganda mechanisms for the Chinese Communist Party and accused them of engaging in intellectual property theft across higher education institutions in the United States.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth further pointed out that these entities had managed to reappear in altered configurations, which ultimately triggered their inclusion onto the latest roster of threatening organizations.
