Prime Minister Carney Backs AtkinsRéalis Bid for Turkish Nuclear Projects
Canadian PM Mark Carney signals strong support for AtkinsRéalis in the race to build Turkey's next nuclear power plants, citing improved project prospects.
POLICY WIRE — Istanbul, Turkey — Prime Minister Mark Carney has signaled that Canadian engineering firm AtkinsRéalis is a strong contender to secure a major contract for Turkey’s upcoming nuclear power infrastructure.
While the Prime Minister noted that such a deal would have seemed unlikely just one year ago, he now believes the bid to provide Candu nuclear reactors for two planned facilities has good chances of succeeding. He described the ongoing negotiations as increasingly intense.
The potential partnership is a central component of a new strategic agreement between Canada and Turkey aimed at deepening cooperation across several sectors. Energy security remains a primary pillar of this bilateral framework.
Turkey is currently moving forward with plans for a second nuclear plant in the Black Sea region of Sinop, with a third facility slated for the northwestern region of Thrace. Beyond nuclear energy, discussions during the Prime Minister’s visit have also touched upon potential Canadian exports of liquefied natural gas and critical minerals.
Carney emphasized that while final contract decisions remain a business-to-business matter, his objective in Istanbul is to highlight how the Canadian market has become more accessible to international investors. He pointed to the compelling combination of Canadian nuclear technology and potential collaborations with Turkish construction firms.
AtkinsRéalis brings over 70 years of international experience to the table, serving as the steward of CANDU nuclear technology. The company currently provides engineering and advisory services to utilities across four continents.
