Poland Apprehends Second Suspect in Murder of Russian Dissident Artist
Polish authorities have detained a second suspect in the June killing of Russian artist Semyon Skrepetsky, a vocal critic of Vladimir Putin.
POLICY WIRE — Warsaw, Poland — Polish law enforcement officials have taken a second individual into custody in connection with the June homicide of a Russian artist known for his vocal opposition to President Vladimir Putin. The announcement was confirmed on Thursday by Tomasz Siemoniak, the head of the nation’s secret service.
The newly detained suspect is a 22-year-old Georgian national. Authorities have leveled charges of complicity against the man regarding the fatal shooting of the artist, who operated under the pseudonym Semyon Skrepetsky.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk previously confirmed the arrest of a suspect in the case, noting that the individual was traveling on a Georgian passport. Tusk has characterized the killing as a political assassination, with officials currently investigating potential links to a broader campaign of Russian sabotage intended to destabilize the region.
The victim, Robert Kuzovkov, was widely recognized for his artistic work criticizing both the Kremlin and Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov. The investigation remains ongoing as Polish authorities work to determine the full extent of foreign involvement in the targeted attack.
