POLICY WIRE — Quito, Ecuador — Ecuadorian authorities have detained former presidential candidate Luisa Gonzalez on Thursday, according to an announcement made by Gabriela Rivadeneira, the leader of the leftist Citizens Revolution party.
Gonzalez, a prominent political ally of former President Rafael Correa, is currently facing an active investigation concerning suspected irregularities related to political financing and campaign expenditure.
Previously, Gonzalez defended her campaign’s financial transparency by stating that her party officially submitted its 2023 presidential campaign spending reports to the electoral authority, asserting that the prosecutor office lacks proper evidence to substantiate its claims.
During the previous political cycle, Gonzalez unsuccessfully contested the snap election against current President Daniel Noboa.
Expressing outrage over the detention on the social media platform X, former President Rafael Correa posted, They arrested Luisa Gonzalez. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
