Yemen’s Houthis Deny Drone Attacks on Saudi City of Medina
Yemen's Houthi rebels deny launching drones toward Medina, refuting claims by the Saudi-led coalition as regional violence intensifies.
POLICY WIRE — Sanaa, Yemen — Yemen’s Houthi movement has formally denied launching any drone strikes against the Saudi holy city of Medina on Wednesday. The Iran-aligned group further stated that it conducted no military operations directed at Saudi Arabia, directly contradicting reports issued by the Saudi-led coalition.
The denial was issued by Yahya Saree, the military spokesperson for the Houthi group. His statement follows claims from the Saudi-led coalition asserting that they had successfully intercepted drones over Medina.
This diplomatic friction occurs amid a significant surge in regional violence. A Houthi missile strike on a government security forces training camp in Yemen’s Shabwa province on Tuesday resulted in the deaths of 73 people.
The recent escalation marks the most severe fighting between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis since a UN-brokered truce largely brought an end to cross-border hostilities in 2022.
