Russia Detains German Citizen Over Alleged Service in Ukrainian Army
Russia's FSB detains an unnamed German national accused of fighting as a mercenary in the Ukrainian army, facing formal criminal charges.
POLICY WIRE — Moscow, Russia — Russia’s principal domestic intelligence agency announced on Wednesday that authorities have placed a German national under arrest on accusations of fighting alongside the Ukrainian military. The Federal Security Service, operating as the successor to the Soviet KGB, withheld the individual’s identity and specific capture details.
According to the security agency’s briefing, the suspect allegedly participated in Ukraine’s armed forces from 2016 to 2018 before committing to a subsequent three-year contract in 2025, which he later abandoned following payment disputes. Investigators claim the man also engaged in combat operations within Afghanistan alongside German forces, in addition to deployments in Somalia and Syria. Consequently, Russian officials intend to prosecute him for mercenary-related offenses.
Independent verification of these sweeping claims by the Federal Security Service remains unavailable. German Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Kathrin Deschauer acknowledged that Berlin has taken note of the emerging reports, stating that the primary focus is verifying the underlying facts.
This enforcement action follows a pattern of recent detentions involving foreign nationals, including a Swedish man accused of illegal border crossing and sabotage, alongside a Japanese journalist targeted over espionage allegations. Over recent years, Moscow has repeatedly detained foreign citizens on various criminal counts prior to executing high-profile prisoner exchanges with Western administrations.
