Zelenskyy Challenges Trump: Provide Interceptors If You Cannot Rein In Putin
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy urges the U.S. to supply critical Patriot interceptor missiles as tensions rise over delayed aid and ongoing Russian strikes.
POLICY WIRE — Oslo, Norway — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a direct appeal to President Trump, stating that if the U.S. leader cannot rein Putin in, he should at least authorize the shipment of long-requested interceptor missiles to help Ukraine defend its energy infrastructure.
The request comes as diplomatic friction between Kyiv and Washington intensifies. Zelenskyy is currently in Norway to meet with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, with Jared Kushner expected to participate remotely, in an effort to stabilize relations that have grown increasingly strained.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the administration on Tuesday, noting that President Trump is frustrated by accusations that he is intentionally harming Ukraine. Rubio emphasized that the U.S. faces a global shortage of Patriot interceptors, with high demand from partners including Saudi Arabia and Israel, rather than a deliberate policy to withhold aid.
Zelenskyy has publicly accused the Trump administration of stalling the delivery of interceptors already purchased by European nations and restricting access to Starshield, the military-grade version of SpaceX’s satellite network. These tools are considered vital for intercepting Russian drones and ballistic missiles.
The situation on the ground remains dire, with Kyiv officials reporting at least four deaths following recent Russian strikes. Zelenskyy noted that his country received no warning from partners regarding the latest wave of attacks, further complicating the dialogue between the two nations.
Tensions were further exacerbated by President Trump’s recent decision to waive certain sanctions on Russian energy sales to mitigate U.S. gas prices. Zelenskyy warned that such moves could embolden Moscow to escalate its four-and-a-half-year invasion.
While U.S.-led peace efforts remain stalled, reports suggest President Trump may meet with Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping in China next month. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha cautioned that any negotiations regarding Ukraine’s future held without Kyiv’s participation would only serve to encourage further Russian aggression.
