Jason Sudeikis Addresses Potential Ted Lasso Season 5 and 6
Ted Lasso co-creator Jason Sudeikis weighs in on a potential fifth and sixth season, discussing future possibilities and Apple's interest.
POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — Ted Lasso co-creator Jason Sudeikis has offered audiences fresh hope that the hit comedy series might return for additional installments beyond its current run.
The actor and screenwriter, who portrays the optimistic AFC Richmond coach Ted, originally anticipated that the show would wrap up following its third season. However, he ultimately surprised viewers by delivering a fourth season that premiered in August of this year.
During an appearance on the Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso podcast, the 51-year-old performer discussed the prospect of extending the narrative into a fifth and sixth season. He remarked that he would like to produce more episodes, though he also noted that it takes a village to make it happen.
When the host asked if he believed Apple would maintain an interest in continuing the series, Sudeikis replied that he would assume so. He added that he simply does not know yet and mentioned that a writers room has not been established.
It was announced last year that Ted Lasso would return for an unexpected fourth season, which was penned after Sudeikis initially felt too creatively exhausted to proceed. Matt Cherniss, the head of programming for Apple TV+, praised the series at the time as a juggernaut that has inspired a passionate global fanbase.
Cherniss stated that everyone at Apple was thrilled to continue collaborating with Jason and the creative minds behind the show. Ted Lasso originally premiered in 2020 to widespread critical and audience acclaim, following an American football coach hired to manage a British soccer team without prior experience.
The acclaimed series has secured numerous awards and nominations, with Sudeikis earning the Emmy Award for Lead Actor in a Comedy in both 2021 and 2022. Sudeikis developed the program alongside Bill Lawrence, Joe Kelly, and Brendan Hunt, featuring a cast that includes Hannah Waddingham, Nick Mohammed, Juno Temple, and Phil Dunster.
Earlier this month, Hunt, who portrays Coach Beard, disclosed that Sudeikis wanted Ted to step away from his primary role at AFC Richmond. Hunt also acknowledged there is no absolute guarantee the series will secure a fifth season.
The season four finale reshuffled the coaching lineup at AFC Richmond, with Ted passing his manager position for the club women’s team, the Lady Greyhounds, to Alice Chilton, played by Tanya Reynolds. Ted instead transitioned to an assistant manager alongside Coach Beard, while former player and coach Roy Kent, played by Brett Goldstein, accepted a position as the new manager for Chelsea.
Hunt explained to Variety that Ted stepping down was a foundational concept Jason wanted from the very beginning of the writers room. The numerous unresolved storylines left in the finale have fueled viewer hopes for another season, though Hunt noted there is not yet any indication those questions will be answered.
Hunt added that Sudeikis plays his cards close to his chest and is not privy to whatever negotiations might be happening between the decision-makers. Fans continue to hope that future seasons will successfully tie up the remaining loose threads left open in the season four finale.
