AAPI Voters Shift Toward Democrats as Support for Trump Wanes Ahead of Midterms
A new AP-NORC/AAPI Data poll shows Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander voters favoring Democrats over Republicans on key economic issues.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, USA — Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) adults are increasingly distancing themselves from President Donald Trump and the Republican Party as the November 3 midterm elections approach. A fresh poll conducted by AAPI Data and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research indicates that Democrats now hold a significant advantage among this demographic regarding critical concerns like healthcare and the economy.
The survey, conducted between September 8 and 15, highlights a notable decline in the President’s economic approval ratings within the AAPI community during his second term. Currently, only about 20% of AAPI adults express approval of his economic performance, while his job approval sits at approximately 25%. Despite this shift, voters remain divided on their impressions of the Democratic Party itself, even as they express greater trust in the party’s platform compared to the GOP.
Economic stability, the rising cost of living, and healthcare access remain the primary priorities for roughly 90% of AAPI adults. Many respondents, such as 45-year-old Rebecca Larocco of Corning, Iowa, expressed frustration over inflation and the economic impact of the ongoing Iran war. While some voters like Len Takahashi of Universal City, Texas, remain focused on finding candidates who prioritize fiscal responsibility, the data suggests that any post-election honeymoon period for the President has largely evaporated.
Concerns regarding the integrity of the upcoming midterms are also prevalent, with roughly half of AAPI adults identifying voter suppression and misinformation as major threats. As the election nears, the poll reveals a complex landscape where dissatisfaction with the current administration is high, yet voters remain skeptical about the ability of either major party to effectively resolve the nation’s most pressing challenges.
