Witnesses Recount Horror After Pickup Truck Plows Through Kansas Youth Soccer Match
Witnesses describe the chaotic scene in Wichita after a pickup truck struck spectators and players at a youth soccer game, leaving two people dead.
POLICY WIRE — Wichita, USA — Witnesses are grappling with the trauma of a deadly incident on Saturday after a pickup truck drove through a youth soccer match at the city-owned Stryker Sports Complex. The collision resulted in two fatalities and left nearly a dozen others injured.
Authorities identified the deceased as 6-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer. Both victims were residents of McPherson, Kansas, and were not related to one another, according to a spokesperson for the Wichita Police Department.
Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses confirmed that ten additional individuals, ranging in age from 5 to 68, were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The incident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. when a dark-colored Chevrolet pickup entered the field, striking both children and adults.
Erica Case, who was attending her son’s game on an adjacent field, described hearing a revving engine followed by a series of loud impacts. She recalled seeing debris flying through the air and the realization that the sounds were not gunfire, but the impact of the vehicle against people.
Case recounted the immediate aftermath, noting that bystanders rushed to provide aid before emergency responders arrived about 10 minutes later. She described the scene as filled with silent heroes who performed CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the victims.
Another witness, David Griekspoor, described the sound of the impacts as resembling small gunfire. He stated that he looked up to see the truck moving through a line of people before he moved his nephew to safety.
Police have interviewed more than 30 witnesses regarding the tragedy. The driver, a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas, was taken into custody but later released without charges following consultation with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.
Capt. Moses noted that the driver, who had two children in her vehicle and another child playing on a different field at the complex, is cooperating with investigators. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with authorities awaiting the results of vehicle inspections and toxicology testing.
