Search for Amelia Earhart’s Lost Aircraft Concludes Without Discovery
Researchers searching for Amelia Earhart's missing plane near Nikumaroro report no findings, identifying previous satellite anomalies as natural debris.
POLICY WIRE — South Pacific — A team of investigators searching for the wreckage of Amelia Earhart’s long-lost aircraft near a remote South Pacific island reported on Sunday that the mission failed to locate the plane.
The researchers determined that a visual anomaly identified in 2020 satellite imagery near the Taraia Peninsula on Nikumaroro was not the missing aircraft. Instead, the team concluded the site contained a collection of large trees that had been deposited along the sandspit.
By the time the expedition reached the location, much of the debris had already broken apart and drifted away. The team noted that only a single Y-shaped segment remained, which had initially been the primary focus of their investigation.
This remains a developing story with further updates expected as more information becomes available.
