Driver Released Without Charges Following Fatal Kansas Youth Soccer Field Crash
Authorities release driver after a pickup truck struck a youth soccer game in Wichita, Kansas, killing two and injuring ten. Investigation remains ongoing.
POLICY WIRE — Wichita, Kansas — A 34-year-old woman has been released from custody without charges as investigators work to determine the cause of a tragic incident at the Stryker Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon. A pickup truck driven by the woman veered from a parking space onto a soccer field at approximately 3:25 p.m., resulting in the deaths of 6-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer, both of McPherson, Kansas.
Wichita police confirmed that the driver is currently released pending the results of toxicology tests and a mechanical inspection of her Chevrolet pickup. Authorities noted that the woman had two of her own children inside the vehicle at the time of the crash, while a third child was participating in a soccer game on a different field at the complex.
The collision left 10 people injured, including five children. The injured minors included a 5-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy, two 8-year-old boys, and a 9-year-old girl. Five adults between the ages of 28 and 68 were also injured, and an additional 61-year-old woman was hospitalized for unrelated medical complications.
Police have conducted interviews with more than 30 witnesses, including the children who were inside the truck. The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office is expected to receive an initial case presentation from police early this week, after which further information may be shared.
Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan expressed condolences to the affected families, emphasizing that while the sequence of events is known, the motive or cause remains under investigation. The incident also forced the suspension of the Kansas State High School Activities Association’s inaugural girls flag football state championship, which was being held on an adjacent field.
In the wake of the tragedy, the local restaurant Meddys has pledged to donate 20% of revenue from its Wichita and Salina locations between Oct. 18 and Oct. 24 to support the victims’ families. The business is also providing free meals to the immediate families of those still hospitalized, coordinating efforts through the nonprofit Kingdom Athletics Mission.
Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the crash to contact investigators at 316-268-4407 or submit anonymous tips via Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111. The investigation into whether the crash was intentional or the result of a medical emergency or other factor continues.
