Lithuania Issues Emergency Shelter Alerts Following Unidentified Aerial Object Detection
Lithuania ordered residents to seek shelter after detecting an unidentified flying object. NATO jets scrambled as regional security tensions remain high.
POLICY WIRE — Vilnius, Lithuania — Authorities in Lithuania issued emergency shelter instructions to residents across the central and northern regions of the country on Sunday morning. The directive remained in effect for approximately one hour following the detection of an unidentified flying object.
The Lithuanian military and the National Crisis Management Centre confirmed the alert, which triggered a red air alert status. In response to the potential security breach, NATO air policing fighter jets were immediately dispatched to the area to investigate.
This incident follows a separate security event on Wednesday, during which residents of Vilnius were instructed to take cover. During that alert, the nation’s president and prime minister were moved to secure locations due to concerns regarding drone activity near the border with Belarus.
Vilnius International Airport also experienced a brief closure on Sunday afternoon after radar systems identified what was initially suspected to be a drone. These recurring alerts highlight ongoing anxieties along NATO’s eastern flank regarding potential incursions linked to the conflict in Ukraine.
