Egypt’s Sisi Seeks Parliamentary Approval to Defend Saudi Arabia Amid Houthi Attacks
President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi calls for an emergency parliamentary session to authorize potential military intervention to protect Saudi Arabia's security.
POLICY WIRE — Cairo, Egypt — President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has requested that the Egyptian parliament convene for an emergency session this Sunday to grant him the authority to intervene in defense of Saudi Arabia should the kingdom request assistance.
The president’s call for legislative backing comes as Saudi Arabia faces a surge in attacks from Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels. The conflict, which saw a significant escalation in fighting beginning in July, has prompted Cairo to signal its readiness to provide defensive support.
Speaking on Saturday, October 17, during a graduation ceremony at the Egyptian Military Academy, El-Sisi emphasized the gravity of the regional security situation. He stated, It is inconceivable that we would allow Saudi Arabia, its security or stability to be harmed.
In response to the president’s directive, the Egyptian House of Representatives has scheduled a plenary session for 1 p.m. on Sunday. The assembly is expected to deliberate on the authorization for the president to take any measures necessary to safeguard the kingdom.
