POLICY WIRE — Nottingham, United Kingdom — The Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust has confirmed that a total of 15 staff members have been dismissed following the unauthorized viewing of medical records belonging to victims of the 2023 Nottingham attacks.
The disciplinary actions follow a breach involving the sensitive data of those impacted by the violent incident. Among the victims were 19-year-old University of Nottingham students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, as well as 65-year-old caretaker Ian Coates.
The perpetrator of the June 2023 attacks, Valdo Calocane, had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. In addition to the three fatalities, Calocane also attempted to kill three other individuals during the spree.
The trust has taken formal action against 14 individuals in relation to the data breach, with 11 staff members specifically identified as having been sacked for the inappropriate access of these private files. The investigation into the handling of these records remains a significant point of concern for the health authority.
