Egyptian President Sisi Confirms 2030 Departure, Rules Out Constitutional Changes
President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi confirms his term ends in 2030, rejecting constitutional amendments and outlining new leadership training initiatives.
POLICY WIRE — Cairo, Egypt — Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced on Saturday that his current presidential term is set to conclude in 2030. He emphasized that the matter of his eventual departure from office is finalized and will not be subject to further debate.
Addressing the public, the president reaffirmed that the nation’s constitution will remain intact and will not be amended to facilitate an extension of his tenure. “I said that the Egyptian constitution would not be touched,” he stated. “This is an entirely settled matter and will not be discussed,” he added.
The president made these remarks while attending a graduation ceremony for new classes at the Egyptian Military Academy. During the event, he also introduced a strategic proposal to utilize the academy to train potential future leaders over a 30-month period.
Sisi, a former general, first ascended to power in 2013. His rise followed the ousting of Mohamed Mursi, Egypt’s first democratically elected president, in the wake of widespread public protests against Mursi’s administration.
