Trump Faces Backlash After Mocking Muslim Name Popularity During Georgia Rally
President Donald Trump sparks controversy after joking about the name Mohammad during a campaign event in Georgia. Rights advocates criticize the rhetoric.
POLICY WIRE — Dalton, United States — During a campaign rally held at a hangar at Dalton Municipal Airport in Georgia on Friday, President Donald Trump drew sharp criticism from rights advocates after making disparaging remarks regarding the popularity of the name Mohammad within the Muslim community.
While discussing the political climate in Iran, the President suggested that if one is uncertain about a person’s name from the Middle East, they should simply refer to them as Mohammad. He further mocked the Iranian presidency by pretending to solicit interest for the position from several individuals he referred to by that name, claiming that Iran is the only nation where nobody desires to hold the office.
The name Mohammad is widely recognized as one of the most common male names among Muslims, as many families choose to name their sons in honor of the Prophet Mohammad, the founder of Islam.
This incident follows a previous occurrence on October 8, when the President misidentified Abdul El-Sayed, a Muslim candidate for the U.S. Senate, by calling him Mohammed while baselessly accusing him of being a specific individual.
