POLICY WIRE — Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — The Asian Tour announced on Friday that it has indefinitely postponed its season-ending Saudi International golf tournament in the wake of a deadly attack on the international airport in Riyadh.
The high-profile tournament, boasting a $5 million prize purse and backed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund, was originally set to be hosted at the Riyadh Golf Club from November 18 to 21.
Organizers pointed to logistical hurdles and operational concerns as key factors behind the delay. An official statement from the Asian Tour noted that the choice was made after carefully reviewing the challenges involved in maintaining international presentation standards.
Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement has intensified drone and ballistic missile strikes targeting Saudi ports, oil infrastructure, and airports. A recent assault on the capital last weekend resulted in at least 12 fatalities and injured more than 300 individuals.
Asian Tour Commissioner Cho Minn Thant emphasized the significance of the competition on the circuit. The PIF Saudi International remains a vital fixture on our calendar, and we look forward to seeing our players compete in Riyadh in the future, Thant stated.
