Trump Pursues Denuclearization Talks With Russia and China as Beijing Resists
Discover President Trump's latest push for denuclearization talks with Russia and China, despite Beijing's refusal to join trilateral arms control.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, United States — United States President Donald Trump revealed he is actively engaging with Russia and China regarding global denuclearization efforts. Speaking during an interview with Newsmax, Trump noted that the United States currently maintains a higher number of deployed warheads than Russia.
Trump expressed a strong desire to eliminate nuclear arsenals globally if feasible. However, he warned that Beijing is projected to match American nuclear capabilities within the next four to five years.
The latest diplomatic push revisits a concept Trump pursued during his initial term in office. In 2020, his administration attempted unsuccessfully to organize trilateral negotiations involving Washington, Moscow, and Beijing.
During a May 14-15 state visit, Trump previously raised a denuclearization proposal with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping while returning from Beijing. Despite these ongoing overtures, Beijing formally announced on a Wednesday that it would decline participation in trilateral arms control discussions alongside the United States and Russia.
Trump’s broader diplomatic agenda also aims to restart stalled negotiations with North Korea. Foreign policy analysts note that persistent geopolitical friction and China’s explicit reluctance to enter arms control frameworks will likely present severe hurdles to reaching a concrete agreement.
