Spooky Houseplants for Halloween: A Guide to Gothic Indoor Decor
Transform your home with eerie houseplants for Halloween. Find tips on spooky decor and low-light plants.
POLICY WIRE — City, Country — As Halloween approaches, homeowners are turning to unique ways to create a gothic atmosphere indoors. With the upcoming release of Ebenezer, a new take on A Christmas Carol featuring Johnny Depp as Scrooge, the demand for spooky décor is rising. Houseplants are proving to be an effective tool in crafting a haunted aesthetic.
Claire Bishop, senior plant buyer at Dobbies Garden Centres, recommends selecting plants that add dramatic visual elements. She highlights species like Tillandsia, or air plants, which can mimic cobwebs and are easy to display. Other options include the black raven plant, Monstera, and Alocasias, all of which offer striking textures and shadows that enhance a spooky setting.
Bishop suggests using artificial lighting to accentuate the features of these plants, such as projecting shadows onto walls. She also advises incorporating dark table mats, lanterns, and even gourds to complete the gothic look. After Halloween, many of these plants can be repurposed for holiday decor, adding a touch of color and texture during the winter season.
