Hindu Nationalist Group Urges India to Block Starlink Amid Musk-Ambani Feud
An influential Hindu group urges India to block Elon Musk's Starlink over security concerns amid a high-stakes feud with billionaire Mukesh Ambani.
POLICY WIRE — New Delhi, India — An influential Hindu nationalist group aligned with India’s ruling party formally requested the government on Tuesday to prevent Elon Musk’s Starlink from rolling out satellite internet services nationwide, pointing to potential national security risks.
The pushback arrives directly on the heels of a public digital dispute between Musk and Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani regarding regulatory hurdles and market access. The friction escalated when Musk posted on October 7 that unspecified oligarchs were shielding a monopolistic chokehold to keep Starlink out of the country.
By Thursday, the SpaceX chief explicitly named Ambani and subsequently published a satirical open letter directed to Prime Minister Ambani by Friday. This rapid escalation over a three-day span noticeably impacted the stock valuation of India’s premier private enterprise.
Musk further inflamed the public row by sharing media coverage detailing financial donations made to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party. While analysts suggest state control and strict security evaluations fuel Asia’s broader satellite resistance, Musk maintains that powerful domestic tycoons are actively obstructing his enterprise.
In response to the accusations, India’s telecommunications minister asserted on Friday that the nation prohibits monopolies across all industries. The communications ministry previously maintained that claims regarding unfair treatment are entirely unfounded, noting that all three satellite broadband applicants are navigating identical approval milestones.
