Swedish Leader Magdalena Andersson Still Struggles to Form Government After Narrow Election Victory
Magdalena Andersson says she can't form a government after Sweden's election. No party won a majority.
POLICY WIRE — Stockholm, Sweden — Swedish Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson has confirmed she remains unable to establish a new government one month after the country’s general election, which resulted in a closely contested outcome.
The election, held earlier this month, saw the centre-left bloc secure a slim majority in the Riksdag, with 176 seats compared to 173 for the Tidö coalition. Despite this, Andersson has been unable to rally sufficient support from other left-wing parties to form a stable administration.
Outgoing Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has since stepped down, and Andersson has repeatedly stated that she cannot assemble the necessary backing to lead the country. The parliament speaker recently urged her to attempt negotiations again, but she has reiterated her inability to reach an agreement.
