Ukraine Advances EU Accession as Minority Rights Law Passes
Ukraine's parliament passes minority rights law, clearing path for next EU accession stages. EU set to open new negotiations.
POLICY WIRE — Kyiv, Ukraine — Ukraine is poised to move forward in its bid for European Union membership after passing a law safeguarding the educational rights of national minorities, according to Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
The legislation, approved by the Verkhovna Rada, removes a key obstacle in Kyiv’s efforts to advance its EU accession process. The move comes as EU member states have already signaled support for opening additional negotiation clusters with Ukraine and Moldova, pending further legislative steps.
EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos indicated that both Ukraine and Moldova could progress to two more stages of their accession talks as early as next week, provided Kyiv finalizes reforms related to minority-language education. This follows a deal between the new Hungarian government and Ukraine, which lifted Hungary’s earlier veto on Kyiv’s EU bid.
