Ukrainian journalist detained in Vienna on espionage charges. Austria claims arrest unrelated to job.
POLICY WIRE — Vienna, Austria — A Ukrainian journalist was detained in Vienna on Thursday after being accused of espionage, according to local authorities, who stated the incident was not connected to his profession.
The journalist, Mykhailo Tkach, head of Ukrainska Pravda’s investigative journalism department, was arrested alongside his cameraman, Yaroslav Bondarenko, during an editorial assignment in the Austrian capital. Authorities said the two were held on suspicion of spying for Ukrainian military intelligence and involvement with a criminal organization.
Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner confirmed that Tkach was released following his detention, while Bondarenko remained in custody. The Ukrainian embassy in Vienna is awaiting further clarification from Austrian officials regarding the circumstances of the arrests, which have sparked concern among press freedom advocates.
