Judge Orders Trump Admin to Cancel Taxpayer-Funded Ads
A federal judge orders the Trump administration to cancel taxpayer-funded TV ads promoting his political message, citing illegal use of funds.
POLICY WIRE — New York, United States — A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to halt any remaining television commercials funded by taxpayer money that promote the president’s political agenda, calling them an illegal misuse of public funds.
U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Rochon in New York ruled in favor of a coalition, including the nonpartisan watchdog Common Cause, which challenged the advertisements. The judge issued a temporary restraining order requiring the administration to cancel all future ads, including those scheduled to air on Sunday night.
The White House has defended the ads as public service announcements, similar to those used by previous administrations. However, legal experts argue the ads violate a federal law that prohibits using congressionally appropriated money for publicity or propaganda. The Department of Homeland Security allocated $20 million in taxpayer funds for the campaign, part of a $175 million package intended for immigration enforcement.
