She died at the National Heart Institute in Malaysia around 9:20 a.m. on Monday, September 28, according to local media reports. Her death marks the end of a life dedicated to public health and social causes.

A former physician, Siti Hasmah used her position as the spouse of a national leader to champion maternal health, family planning, literacy, drug prevention, and mental health awareness. She celebrated her 100th birthday just months before her passing and was recognized by ASEAN Records as the oldest living spouse of a former prime minister.

The Malaysian king, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, expressed his condolences on Facebook, offering prayers for strength to her family following the loss. Mahathir, who is now 101, served as prime minister from 1981 to 2003 and again from 2018 to 2020. The couple had been married since 1956 and marked their 70th anniversary in August.

Hasmah, born in Selangor, was the first woman to hold a government medical officer position in Kedah, her husband’s hometown. She and Mahathir had seven children, including activist Marina Mahathir and former Kedah chief minister Mukhriz Mahathir. In her memoir, she described Mahathir as her hero and credited him with helping her through academic challenges.
