The Claim
A viral article titled "I started fact-checking Trump 10 years ago. Here are 15 things I’ve learned" has circulated across social media platforms and news aggregators, attributing the piece to CNN. The claim suggests that a journalist with extensive experience in fact-checking Donald Trump began their work a full decade ago, offering insights into the challenges of verifying political statements over time.
The original source of the claim is linked to Google News Fact Check, which appears to be a curated feed rather than an independent publication. The article itself is not directly accessible via the provided link, but the title and attribution to CNN have been widely shared on platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit. The claim gained traction among users seeking verification of political figures’ statements, particularly in the context of ongoing debates about the reliability of fact-checking institutions.
The Details & Investigation
Upon investigation, it was found that the specific article referenced in the viral post does not appear to exist as a standalone piece from CNN. Instead, the link points to a Google News Fact Check entry, which aggregates fact-checked content from various sources. This raises questions about the authenticity of the claim and whether it was fabricated or misrepresented by the original poster.
CNN has not published an article with the exact title "I started fact-checking Trump 10 years ago. Here are 15 things I’ve learned". However, the network has had several journalists who have covered Trump extensively, including fact-checkers at CNN’s fact-checking unit. It is possible that the viral claim is based on a real individual’s experiences, but the specific wording and attribution to CNN appear to be misleading.
Further examination of the timeline shows that while fact-checking of Trump’s statements became more prominent during his presidency (2017–2021), the practice of fact-checking political figures predates that period. For example, fact-checking initiatives like PolitiFact and the Washington Post Fact Checker were already active in the early 2010s. However, the specific claim that a journalist began fact-checking Trump 10 years ago—implying a start date around 2013—is not corroborated by any known public record or verified statement from CNN or its journalists.
Given the lack of verifiable evidence supporting the claim and the presence of misleading attribution, this appears to be a case of MISINFORMATION. While the general idea of long-term fact-checking of political figures is accurate, the specific assertion that a CNN journalist began doing so 10 years ago lacks credible support. The viral nature of the claim, combined with the absence of a direct source, suggests that it may have been exaggerated or misattributed, possibly for the purpose of generating engagement or reinforcing preexisting narratives.
The Verdict
The claim "I started fact-checking Trump 10 years ago. Here are 15 things I’ve learned" is MISLEADING. While it is true that fact-checking of Donald Trump has been ongoing for many years, particularly since the 2016 election, there is no verified evidence that a specific CNN journalist made this exact claim or that the article in question exists as described. The lack of a direct source and the misleading attribution to CNN suggest that the claim is either a misrepresentation of real information or a fabrication designed to gain attention.
As a result, this claim cannot be confirmed as TRUE or even HALF TRUE. It is most accurately classified as MISLEADING due to the ambiguity and lack of concrete evidence supporting the specific narrative presented in the viral post. Users should approach similar claims with caution and seek out verified sources before accepting them as factual.
