The Odyssey Becomes Universal’s Top-Grossing Film in Record Time

POLICY WIRE — City, Country — Christopher Nolan’s epic film The Odyssey has shattered records, becoming Universal Pictures’ most successful movie of all time just months after its release.
The film, which premiered on July 17, is an adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek classic and follows Matt Damon as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he embarks on a perilous journey home after the Trojan War.
With global earnings exceeding $1.677 billion, The Odyssey has now outperformed Jurassic World, which previously held the title with $1.671 billion. The film is projected to reach $1.685 billion by the end of this weekend, placing it among the top 12 highest-grossing films ever made.

Directed and produced by Nolan, who also co-wrote the script with his wife, Dame Emma Thomas, the three-hour cinematic spectacle features a star-studded cast including Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, and Tom Holland. It has remained at the top of global box office charts for multiple weekends.
Donna Langley, chairman of NBCUniversal entertainment, praised the film as a “generational event” and called it one of the most ambitious cinematic achievements in recent history. The movie marks Nolan’s most successful project yet, having crossed the $1 billion mark globally less than a month after its debut.
The Odyssey joins The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael as the only Universal films to gross over $1 billion this year. With a production budget of $250 million, the film stands as one of the most expensive projects in Nolan’s career.
