POLICY WIRE — Edgartown, Massachusetts — A woman in her late 20s was rushed to the hospital on Monday afternoon after sustaining leg injuries that are believed to be from a shark bite at Martha’s Vineyard, according to local officials.

James Hagerty, the town administrator of Edgartown, reported that emergency services arrived at Norton Point around 1:40 p.m. following the incident. The woman’s injuries are consistent with a bite from a marine animal, although no shark or other creature was seen at the time.

Hagerty confirmed that the woman’s injuries are not life-threatening and do not involve the loss of a limb. As a precaution, South Beach was closed to swimmers for several hours while the town evaluated the safety conditions.

The Town is grateful for the swift action of emergency personnel and beach staff, Hagerty stated. Beachgoers are urged to stay alert in the water and adhere to instructions from lifeguards and any posted beach advisories.
