POLICY WIRE — London, UK — The summer of 2026 has been officially declared the hottest in the UK since record-keeping began in 1884, according to provisional statistics from the Met Office.

This summer has surpassed the previous record set just last year, with multiple weather records being repeatedly broken in recent years. The mean average temperature for June, July, and August was the highest ever recorded, despite cooler conditions in the north.

An average mean temperature of 16.5°C makes this summer provisionally the warmest on record. It is also one of the sunniest summers on record for some areas, dating back to 1910. The season was notably dry for many regions, though late-season rain prevented seasonal rainfall records from being broken.

Dr. Amy noted that only average conditions are needed for the remainder of August to surpass the record set last year. The UK is on track to record its warmest summer on record for mean temperature.
