Colombian President Announces Death of Key FARC Dissident Leader

POLICY WIRE — Bogota, Colombia — President Abelardo de la Espriella revealed that a significant figure in the dissident factions of the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) was eliminated in a military operation on Sunday. The operation took place in a turbulent area in the southwest of the country.

The deceased, identified as “Felipe” or Arcadio, was described by the president as a devastating loss to the dissident faction commanded by “Iván Mordisco.” De la Espriella shared a video on X, purportedly displaying a body bag containing the individual alongside weapons and ammunition confiscated during the operation.

We are tightening the noose around Mordisco and his networks, the president cautioned, affirming the continuation of offensive actions against unlawful armed entities. Any criminal who refuses to surrender will meet their end in a body bag.

De la Espriella attributed numerous assaults on police stations in Valle del Cauca, executed via drone-dropped explosives, to Felipe. He led a unit within the Jaime Martínez faction, a segment of the FARC dissidents that declined to partake in the government’s 2016 peace talks.

The leader was also implicated in the placement of explosive-laden gas cylinders on roads, attacks on military units, vehicle arson, extortion, and other criminal activities in Valle del Cauca, according to the president.

This marks another instance of de la Espriella announcing the demise of a leader from an illicit armed group since assuming office. The president has pledged a stringent approach against such groups, diverging from the policy of his predecessor, Gustavo Petro. He has urged “Iván Mordisco” and other leaders to turn themselves in to authorities and face the legal repercussions.

Additionally, de la Espriella disclosed the apprehension of Emilio José Cordero Sierra, alias “Fantasma,” who is charged with orchestrating the trade of cocaine for military equipment with FARC dissident factions. The United States is seeking his extradition on allegations involving terrorism, conspiracy to commit a crime, and drug trafficking.

In recent developments, the president authorized the extradition to the United States of five suspects, whose transfer had been postponed as part of the peace initiative advanced by the previous administration. De la Espriella officially terminated this process through resolutions issued on Friday.
