Carney Delivers History Lesson After Trump’s Attempted Rename of Lake Ontario

POLICY WIRE — Ottawa, Canada — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has responded to President Donald Trump’s directive to rename Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’. Carney took to social media to clarify the historical significance of the lake’s name, which he stated is derived from the Wendat word ‘Ontari’io’, meaning ‘the lake is beautiful, the lake is great’.

Carney emphasized that the name predates both the Canadian Confederation and the Declaration of Independence of the United States. He asserted that the lake has been, and will continue to be, known as Lake Ontario.

Trump’s order, which directs federal agencies to recognize the lake as ‘Lake America’, is seen as a retaliatory move in the ongoing trade dispute between the two nations. Despite the order, Canada and its citizens are not bound to adopt the new name.

The renaming attempt follows Trump’s imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods, to which Carney responded with retaliatory tariffs on American products. Trump criticized Canada for not contributing to its defense costs under the American military umbrella and expressed frustration over the trade negotiations.

In his remarks, Trump also questioned Canada’s trade practices and suggested a re-shoring of automobile manufacturing to the U.S. He accused Canadian officials of treating the U.S. poorly and being ‘nasty people’.
