POLICY WIRE — Hanoi, Vietnam — Vietnam has firmly opposed all foreign activities in the Paracel Islands, located in the disputed South China Sea. This follows reports of new Chinese construction on an islet in the contested archipelago.
Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang stated on August 28 that Vietnam has sufficient historical evidence and legal grounds to affirm its sovereignty over the Paracels in accordance with international law.
Vietnam has declared that all foreign activities in the Hoang Sa archipelago, including Hai Sam Reef and Ba Ba Island, without its permission are completely illegal and invalid. The nation has demanded an immediate end to these activities and has warned against their recurrence.
Hanoi has lodged a serious diplomatic protest with Beijing over the Chinese land-reclamation activities in the Paracel Islands. Reports indicate accelerated dredging and landfill operations at Antelope Reef.
China claims that the living conditions and local economy will benefit from these activities. However, Vietnam has resolutely opposed these actions, engaging in diplomatic exchanges to affirm its position.
