Nepal-China Border Tragedy: Death Toll Surges Amid New Flood Threat

POLICY WIRE — Kathmandu, Nepal — Rescue teams intensified their search efforts on Thursday for hundreds of individuals unaccounted for following a devastating torrent of water and mud that surged through communities along the Nepal-China border. The disaster, triggered by a glacier collapse, has left a trail of destruction and despair.

The torrent, several stories high, swept through the area, claiming over 350 lives and leaving more than 1,300 people missing, according to police reports. The situation remains critical as authorities warn of potential further flooding from a barrier lake formed in the aftermath of the initial disaster.

Helicopters have been pivotal in the rescue operations, airlifting over 3,000 people to safety and transporting the injured to hospitals. The focus remains on locating survivors, particularly those trapped in hazardous conditions such as a hydropower tunnel in Rasuwa.

Nepali and Chinese authorities are on high alert, with reports indicating a dam on the Tibet side may have burst, adding to the urgency of the situation. The disaster has also impacted foreign nationals, with over 500 foreigners, including about 90 Americans, among the missing.

The catastrophic event was caused by the collapse of bedrock beneath a glacier in the Himalayan region, leading to a rockfall that registered a 5.2 magnitude seismic event. The resulting surge of water and debris has devastated the region, with survivors recounting scenes of chaos and destruction.

Among the survivors is Customs officer Karbir Gaire, who described the event as akin to a tsunami, emphasizing the sudden and overwhelming nature of the disaster. The search for missing persons continues, with families anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones.
