POLICY WIRE — London, UK — The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Canada have jointly condemned Israel’s proposed expansion of settlements in the West Bank. The announcement has drawn sharp criticism from these nations, who view the move as a significant obstacle to peace in the region.
In a coordinated statement, the foreign ministries of the five nations expressed their deep concern over Israel’s plans. “The expansion of settlements in the West Bank undermines the viability of a two-state solution and contradicts international law,” the statement read. “We urge Israel to reconsider this decision and engage in meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders.”
The West Bank, considered occupied territory by the international community, has been a focal point of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for decades. Israel’s settlement activities in the area have repeatedly drawn condemnation from the United Nations and various global actors.
The European Union has also voiced its opposition to the settlement expansion. “The EU reiterates its firm opposition to Israel’s settlement policy and its continued construction and expansion in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem,” an EU spokesperson said. “Settlements are illegal under international law and constitute a major obstacle to a two-state solution.”
Canada’s Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of adhering to international law. “Canada is deeply concerned by Israel’s announcement to expand settlements in the West Bank. Settlements are a violation of international law and undermine the prospects for a comprehensive and lasting peace,” the Minister stated.
This condemnation comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with recent violence and political instability further complicating the situation. The international community continues to call for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, grounded in mutual recognition and respect for international law.
