POLICY WIRE — Panama City, Panama — CK Hutchison Holdings has initiated legal proceedings to claim over $1.5 billion in damages from the Panamanian government. The conglomerate asserts that the seizure of two ports at the ends of the Panama Canal has significantly harmed its investments.
The Hong Kong-based multinational announced its intention to seek compensation following Panama’s move to take control of the ports, which are critical nodes in global trade. CK Hutchison contends that the action has disrupted its operations and undermined the value of its investments.
A spokesperson for CK Hutchison stated, “The seizure of our ports has caused substantial financial damage to our company. We are pursuing all available legal avenues to recover our losses and protect our investments.”
The Panamanian government has yet to issue a formal response to the claim. However, officials have previously indicated that the takeover was necessary to ensure national control over strategic assets and to address what they describe as inadequate service and high fees charged by private operators.
The dispute is expected to draw significant attention from international trade and investment circles, given the critical role the Panama Canal plays in global shipping. The outcome could set a precedent for similar disputes involving foreign investments in sovereign assets.
