POLICY WIRE — Edinburgh, Scotland — A distinctive bright orange fungus has been observed emerging in the Cairngorms following a significant wildfire last month, according to Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS).
FLS reported that this fungus is one of the initial signs of life in the burned woodland areas. The wildfire, which occurred last month, has left a lasting impact on the region’s ecosystem.
“The appearance of this fungus is a natural part of the recovery process in burned forests,” stated an FLS spokesperson. “It indicates that the ecosystem is beginning to regenerate, even though it may take years for the woodland to fully recover.”
The fungus, commonly referred to as ‘fire fungus,’ thrives in the nutrient-rich soil left behind after a wildfire. Its bright coloration is due to specific pigments that protect it from UV radiation and aid in its rapid growth.
