Daniel Kinahan Charged with Leading International Criminal Organization

POLICY WIRE — Dublin, Ireland — Daniel Kinahan, 49, was charged by Irish prosecutors with directing a criminal organization during a special court sitting on Sunday. The charges come following his extradition from the United Arab Emirates.

Kinahan faces allegations that he orchestrated an international drug smuggling and money laundering operation with connections in Britain, Spain, and the United States. Air Tracker data confirmed that an Irish Air Corps plane from Dubai landed on Sunday evening at a military airport in Ireland, facilitating his return.

High-Speed Convoy Arrives at Dublin Court

A high-speed police convoy was seen arriving at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin, transporting Daniel Kinahan after his extradition from the United Arab Emirates.

Kinahan had earlier arrived in Ireland aboard an Irish military aircraft from Dubai after UAE courts refused to prevent his extradition. He was subsequently taken from Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel to the Special Criminal Court.

Daniel Kinahan Charged With Directing Criminal Organisation

Daniel Kinahan appeared before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin, where Irish prosecutors charged him with directing the activities of a criminal organisation between 8 October 2015 and 6 April 2017.

During the brief hearing, Kinahan was not represented by a lawyer. Detective Sergeant Colin Davidson told the three-judge court that Kinahan had been arrested at the aerodrome at 6:49pm.

A judge began explaining the process for a potential bail application, to which Kinahan reportedly replied: “I think we both know that I won’t be getting bail but thank you for explaining.”

Kinahan was subsequently remanded in custody and is due to appear before the court again on 5 October. He appeared in the dock wearing a black hoodie and glasses.

Thomas “Bomber” Kavanagh and the Kinahan Organisation

Thomas “Bomber” Kavanagh, described as the head of the Kinahan organisation’s operations in Britain, was previously sentenced to 21 years in prison after being convicted of orchestrating drug shipments into the UK.

Two other men involved in the operation received sentences of 20 years and 19½ years.

During the investigation, Britain’s National Crime Agency said officers recovered 15kg of cocaine and 220kg of cannabis. The drugs were concealed inside asphalt-removal equipment equipped with a tracking device at the Port of Dover.
