Legacy of Courage: Celebrating 77 Years of Independence

As Pakistan marks its 77th Independence Day, it is a moment to reflect on the ideals that have shaped our nation and the resilience that continues to define us. Our journey, rooted in the Two Nation Theory, is a testament to the enduring values of freedom, equality, and justice. These principles, which guided the creation of Pakistan, remain as vital today as those were in 1947. The resolve to defend Pakistan against all internal and external threats was unambiguously reiterated by the Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan Army General Asim Munir while he was speaking at the Azadi Parade on 13/14 August 2024 at Pakistan Military Academy Kakul. The Army Chief covered a host of issues in his speech. He said that the bond with Afghanistan as a brotherly Islamic country, must not be overshadowed by divisions or discord. He emphasized that the leadership in Afghanistan should prioritize genuine relationships over the disruptive forces that threaten regional harmony.

He stated that the occasion offers an opportunity not only to reflect on the sacrifices and struggles that led to our nation’s creation but also to reaffirm our solidarity with those, who continue to endure oppression and injustice. Today, more than ever, we stand firm with our Kashmiri brothers and sisters, who have been subjected to decades of suffering under an illegal occupation. Our commitment to Kashmir brethren remains to be unwavering, much like a rock that stands against the relentless tide, as we continue to provide political, diplomatic, and moral support in to Kashmiris in their rightful struggle for self-determination. General Munir also noted that while Pakistan’s Constitution ensures freedom of speech, it is crucial to recognize that this freedom has its limits. On this day of celebration, we also express our gratitude to Almighty Allah for the blessing of freedom, a gift bestowed upon us with courage and strength. The Armed Forces of Pakistan are committed to the internal and external defence of the nation, vowing that their sacrifices will not go in vain. He warned that the presence of ‘Fitna’ can hollow the foundations of a country, paving the way for external aggression, and underscored that weakening the armed forces is tantamount to undermining the very integrity of the nation.

Pakistan stands opposed to oppression and injustices and backs those, who are fighting for their legitimate rights like the people of Palestine, who are being brutally suppressed by a tyrant. This day is a poignant reminder of the grave injustices faced by the people of Palestine. The ongoing genocide inflicted upon innocent Palestinians by Israeli forces is a dark chapter in modern history, representing one of the most glaring violations of human rights. The international community’s silence on such issues, particularly regarding the plight of the Palestinians, is deeply troubling. However, Pakistan has consistently raised its voice against these injustices at every possible platform. Our government, with unwavering resolve, has highlighted the grave human rights violations in Palestine, condemning tyrants and demanding accountability. Pakistan’s efforts at various international forums have remained commendable, serving as a beacon of hope for those, who seek justice and an end to oppression. Pakistan is a country of consequence and its Armed Forces are ready to respond to inimical threats from within and without. Their desire for peace must not be mistaken by any one as the weakness. Whenever required, their response to the enemies will be of retribution and pain.

In recognizing these challenges, it is essential to appreciate the invaluable support Pakistan has received from its allies, particularly in the times of need. Countries such as Saudi Arabia, China, Qatar, the UAE, and Turkey have stood by Pakistan, providing much-needed support and reinforcing the bonds of brotherhood within the Muslim Ummah. These nations have demonstrated a profound understanding of Pakistan’s strategic importance, not only in the region but also within the broader context of the Muslim world and the global community. The support from these nations has been instrumental in strengthening Pakistan’s position on critical issues, enabling it to navigate the complex challenges it faced. This solidarity is a testament to Pakistan’s enduring status as a significant player on the global stage, a nation whose voice matters and whose actions resonate far beyond its borders.

The COAS also paid tribute to the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, who have borne the brunt of terrorism for decades. Their resilience is a powerful example of the unity and strength that defines Pakistan. It is through their sacrifices that the nation has continued to fight against extremism and violence, ensuring the safety and security of our homeland.

It is crucial that we continue to uphold the values that define our nation—justice, solidarity, and resilience. The COAS’s call to stand united and rise above individual interests to serve the nation resonates with every Pakistani. It is a call to action, urging us all to remember that Pakistan is not just a country—it is our identity, our pride, and the reason for our existence. In wake of above-mentioned statements, it is evidently clear that the Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan Army means business. His recent address at PMA encapsulates his sentiments on numerous issues with clarity and conviction. His speech underscored the importance of unity, both within our nation and among our allies, as we confront the challenges of the modern world.

As we celebrate this 77th Independence Day, we do so with a deep sense of pride in our nation’s achievements and a renewed commitment to the values that have guided us since our inception. We cherish the bonds of brotherhood with our allies, who have stood by us through thick and thin. And we look to the future with confidence, knowing that Pakistan’s status as a significant and influential nation will continue to grow, both within the region and on the global stage. The journey ahead is long, but with unity and resolve, we will continue to thrive and uphold the principles of justice and freedom that define us.
