POLICY WIRE — Tokyo, Japan — A significant 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Japan on Tuesday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), which promptly issued a tsunami alert.

The earthquake, which occurred at 4:27 PM local time on the island of Kyushu, registered at the highest possible level seven on Japan’s Shindo scale of shaking intensity.

The JMA warned that the ensuing tsunami could reach up to one meter in height — and arrive around 5 PM local time. Broadcaster NHK reported that waves of this magnitude may have already been recorded.

The earthquake follows a 7.2-magnitude tremor that hit northern Japan earlier. Authorities are currently assessing the situation — and providing updates as more information becomes available.
