28th May is a historic day in the memory of every Pakistanian, and requires a lot of emotions. Youm-e-Takbeer is a day that is observed to commemorate the successful nuclear tests carried out in Chagai, Balochistan in 1998. The day that proved Pakistan to the world that the defense, sovereignty, and national dignity are unbeatable and unattainable. The mountains of Chagai now became a symbol of courage, determination and strategic strength; a moment of pride for Pakistan’s first ever nuclear power. More than an achievement of science, today, 28th May, is a unity, resilience and self-respect of the Pakistani nation.
This goal didn’t start in 1998. After the establishment of Pakistan in 1947, it encountered multifaced security threats and came across many wars. 1971 was a paradigm shift in the country’s defense mentality in particular. Pakistan knew that only a robust and a credible defence system could help ensure a durable peace. India’s first ever nuclear tests took place in 1974, which greatly altered the strategic dynamics in the region and necessitated Pakistan to enhance its own nuclear arsenal. Pakistan’s science leaders and scientists knew that of course they could not survive with short sightedness, compromises and lack of advancement.
The Pakistani effort to acquire nuclear weapons was a laborious process that began more that forty years ago and ongoing throughout extremely challenging conditions. Keeping in mind the odds, the economic difficulties, international pressure, sanction and a lack of resources Pakistani scientists and engineers dedicated themselves to their mission with sincerity and patriotism. People like Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan became heroes of the nation for embodying its skills and resolve. The programme was never introduced by the state for aggressive or expansion policy but just to ensure the security of Pakistan and safeguard its nationhood in the volatile area.
However, Pakistan was hounded by the international community to not retaliate to India’s further nuclear tests in May 1998. The mightier states tried to influence Pakistan to keep its head down via threats, diplomacy and economic sanctions. The Pakistani leadership, however, knew that any inaction at this decisive juncture would ultimately cost the country’s security and its position will be undermined indefinitely. The five tests were conducted on 28th May 1998 by Pakistan, and another on 31st May 1998. The country reaped the fruits of its achievements, the world recognized Pakistan’s strategic capability and determination.
Youm-e-Takbeer is not just about the military power. Refers to the doctrine that a sovereign country has the right to self-defence and the protection of its people. Pakistan’s nuclear know-how created an effective deterrent which has helped in maintaining the strategic balance in South Asia. Tensions in the region have been in existence since 1998 but the threat of large-scale war has curbed aggression. In this context the Pakistani nuclear capability has helped to bring the stability and peace in the region because no one can threaten the sovereignty of Pakistan.
Meanwhile, knowledge and science, and a sense of national unity are also reinforced with the introduction of Youm-e-Takbeer. This was the result of the cooperation and commitment of Pakistan’s scientists, institutions and Government for the sake of Pakistan. It has proved that Pakistani talent is able to tackle even most difficult tasks with the help of its determination and patriotism. 28th May has a spirit that should be echoed in the future generations for what they excel above and beyond the military side- namely education, technology, medicine, engineering, and economic development. A safe and secure border coupled with educated people form strong nations.
It’s also a day of history with a powerful message of unity. There is no division, no difference when country’s security and sovereignty is at stake. That is why Pakistan became a success story in the field of nuclear technology as it worked together with a single interest. Today, Pakistan needs a similar sense of unity and mutual cooperation to address its economic woes, fortify institutions and create an enviable future for future generations.
Youm-e-Takbeer should be celebrated all around the country every year in memory of it proudly, thankfully and responsibly. Pride in the bravery of the people under a foreign pressure. Thanks to the scientists, the Armed Forces and the leaders that sacrificed for this achievement. Responsibility to make sure that Pakistan moves forward as a strong and stable self-reliant nation. On 28th May, it has become more than just a historical date, it’s a declaration of Pakistan’s resolve to safeguard its sovereignty, honor its dignity and stride forward with confidence and dignity.
