POLICY WIRE — Caracas, Venezuela — Maria Corina Machado, Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, announced on Sunday that she won’t participate in the upcoming US-backed talks with the interim government led by Delcy Rodriguez, scheduled for August.

In a joint statement with Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who ran for president in Venezuela’s 2024 elections, Machado stated that the opposition would “not participate” in the “design, development, and operation” of the talks. The statement didn’t provide further details on the reasons behind their decision.

The interim government of Rodriguez and a group of former officials had planned the talks in mid-July, aiming to address the ongoing political crisis in the country. However, Machado’s refusal to engage complicates the negotiation process.
