POLICY WIRE — Kingston, Jamaica — Legendary Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt has delivered a poignant message to emerging Australian athletics sensation, Gout Gout, emphasizing the critical importance of remaining dedicated to track and field as his profile escalates and external pressures mount.
The former eight-time Olympic gold medalist stressed the necessity of a strong support system to ensure the young athlete stays centered on his professional trajectory, warning against the distractions that can derail a promising career.
Gout Gout’s Remarkable Achievements on the Track
Just recently, the 18-year-old Australian phenom successfully defended his 200m national title at the Australian Athletics Championships on April 12th. His remarkable time of 19.67 seconds not only surpassed American sprinter Erriyon Knighton’s world under-20 record of 19.69 seconds but also notably eclipsed Bolt’s own fastest junior time of 19.93 seconds from 2004.
Beyond his 200m triumph, Gout also secured the national under-20 100m championship, showcasing his versatility on the track. He previously broke the 20-second barrier with a wind-assisted 19.84 seconds at the previous year’s championships and established the fastest 200m time for a 16-year-old in 2024, clocking an impressive 20.04 seconds.
Bolt’s Crucial Mentorship and Warning
“At that young age, because I was there, you start getting put left and right and then you forget track and field.”
Bolt, who once remarked that Gout reminded him of his younger self, shared his candid perspective with CNN. He warned against the common pitfalls faced by young talents, stating, “At that young age, because I was there, you start getting put left and right and then you forget track and field.”
The sprint king emphasized the critical role of a robust support network. “Hopefully he has the right set of people to guide him and keep him focused on track and field because the rest of the stuff will always be there,” Bolt explained. He concluded with a stark caution: “But if you mess up on track and field, then it all goes away.”
Rising Star’s Future Ambitions
Looking ahead, Gout Gout is slated to make his inaugural appearance in the prestigious Diamond League, competing in the 200m event in Oslo on June 10th. However, he has signaled his intention to forgo the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
This strategic decision allows him to concentrate his efforts on the upcoming World Under-20 Championships scheduled for August in Oregon, prioritizing junior world success.
